Why Do I Write This

Why Do I Write This

For more than a year I have been studying Stoicism. I am currently reading a new, annotated version of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations. The Roman emperor wrote those passages for himself or so scholars agree. As I write this Blog after a long hiatus, I wonder if I might be better off shutting it down and just writing for myself. In fact, for many months, I have been writing three pages a day of observations that never make it to this Blog.

I have a need, apparently, to post to the Internet. I used to do Facebook, but I concluded that Facebook was a cesspool of nonsense. I also found myself posting, then regularly checking for "likes" and complimentary comments. This Blog, on the other hand, does not allow comments, and I have never told anyone that I do it. If you are reading this now, there's a good chance we have never met and never will.

The way I view this Blog is that I get something out of it. If you, somehow, have an "oh yeah" moment reading it, my pleasure. I know my thoughts are not unique, and I really know that my intellect is not particularly noteworthy. When it comes to ranking the great thinkers of 2021, no one has me on his or her list because (1) I am unknown and (2) I do not belong. These are the observations of a 69 year old man hoping to scratch an itch without using Facebook or Twitter as a scratcher.
